Shoes storage that looks stunning

Description: This hack is quick simple to realize.

Assemble and fix to the wall 4 TRONES boxes for the shoes storage. 2 columns of 2.

Use the rest of a MALM item (in our case the MALM bed structure) to realize the wood top.

Fix the wood part to the wall.

It's done and it cost you very little money.

Space-Saving STUVA Storage Closet and Shelf Inset Into Wall


Materials: 1 – STUVA Storage combination with shelf [098.778.02], 1 – STUVA Storage combination with drawers [498.887.09], hammer, hand saw, plasterboard saw, 3" nails, 2"x2" angle brackets, 4" straight straps, 2"x3" framing studs

Description: This project builds upon approach used in this IKEA hack posted earlier using HEMNES units. The objective was to utilize space behind the knee walls which abound in our Cape Cod–style house. Destination of STUVA units was knee wall beside each of our daughters’ beds. Units we chose were two STUVA units of same height which we planned to stack on top of each other. We configured bottom unit to have 2 small top drawers and larger bottom drawer. Top unit was skinnier and only had shelves with no doors.

Wall Preparation
Stacked STUVA unit was 50.5" high. The knee wall can only accommodate a 46" high unit. Opening of appropriate size was cut out of the wall using plasterboard saw and hand saw. Simple inverted-C platform using 2"x3" studs was provided to support the bottom of unit. Nailers were attached to wall studs to provide mounting points for STUVA system.


STUVA Unit Preparation
Bottom of skinnier unit only had shelves so we decided to cut off the bottom by 4". The total height of stacked unit now became 45.5" which fitted in 46" high wall opening. STUVA units had flimsy cardboard backs so ¼" MDF boards were nailed to backs. Some old newspaper was stuffed into the cavity between these 2 boards. Two 2"x2" steel straps were screwed into backs of STUVA top and bottom units. Additional 4" steel straps were screwed on each side where units met.


Unit Installation
System was eased into wall opening and leveled. Holes were pre-drilled at the back bottom of lower unit. Bottom was anchored to inverted-C platform under it using 3-3" nails. Additional holes were pre-drilled on each side and anchored to wood blocks installed earlier using 3" nails. Molding was installed around each unit to cover gaps between wall and closet system. All moldings were caulked, spackled and sanded before applying two coats of paint same color as walls. Drawers and shelves were assembled and installed.

Antonius frame turns into printer cabinet, to its surprise


Materials: Antonius frame, Harlig doors, drawer runners, Jigsaw and Fixa screwdriver.

Description: Since one of our printers is 1cm too wide to fit inside a Besta cabinet we had to find a solution to house our two printers in a very small space. It had to be a cabinet with slide-out feature so we could tuck them away when not in use.

We realized that the Antonius frame was less than half the price than that of a standard DIY metal frame, so we bought one and assembled it.


As this was a very-low-budget hack we used aluminium profiles we had at home to attach the runners to the frame. The frame guides helped levelling the runners. Luckily a Harlig 40x60 door fits seamlessly between the runners.

For the top and the front we cut two Harlig doors (60x57 for the top, 60x70 for the front) to match the width of the Antonius frame. Because this cabinet was supposed to be alongside a Vika table, the length of the top was kept at 60cm, despite the 54cm frame length.

We installed an extension socket on the inside for all the printer and other plugs. We still had the space to use the bottom guide for an Antonius drawer, very convenient for storing paper. ;)

Aneboda High Cabinet


Materials: Aneboda Night Stand (Discontinued) and Aneboda three drawer small chest

Description: I had an old aneboda nightstand I used as a printer stand. I also had a small Aneboda three drawer chest my niece had adorned with stickers. I was already thinking of painting them over, but when I moved into yet another tiny NYC apartment, I realized there was not enough room for both of them. So I put the nightstand over the dresster and connected them with brackets. There was about a quarter inch difference in their sizes after painting and stenciling it seems like one tall piece. Voila, my very own linen tower.

Looong bench-cabinet


Materials: "Faktum" wall cabinet, tape measure, power drill, cirkle saw, screwdriver.

Description: Before we moved to our house we lived in a very beautiful apartment witch was housed in an old school built in 1900. Our apartment was built in the old music study, with big windows and since it was an old class room the living room/kitchen was very spacious.

The only problem we had was that the kitchen part was a bit small and that there were not a lot of storage cabinets.

Since the room was very big I had a 7 meter long wall which I could use for storage. Initially I wanted to hang some kitchen cabinets on the wall but after some investigation I dropped this idea because the wall was too weak.

Instead I decided to get a base-frame welded and put the (in my case IKEA) wall cabinets onto the frame.


I wanted the whole furniture to be as floating as possible since I couldn't hang it on the wall so I designed it to be a bit industrial with an (in my mind) oversized dimension steel frame and just 3 pair of legs. Later in the project I realized that the dimension of the steel was not oversized at all, because of the wide gap between the legs and the weight of the stuff in the cabinets the dimension was good. If you then add the weight of the people that used it as a bench to sit on I realized I should have gone even more industrial.


I purchased 6 "Faktum" wall cabinets and doors, since I had a long wall I choose the 92x40cm one. As seen in the pictures I put the wall cabinets upside down so that the doors opened downwards. The cabinet had a door lift for "gentle closing" which had to be inverted since the cabinet was installed upside-down.

The first one was a bit tricky but if you just open the tightening screw enough you can adjust it so it will work inverted. DO NOT disassemble the unit totally! After this modification and some fine tuning the door will be hard to open (It will stay in half open position and not drop by itself breaking the hinges), and very easy to close. As an addition I mounted some magnetic locks to that the door and cabinet so that closed tightly.

When I started this little project I wanted to have a solid wooden top on the cabinets but I quickly realized that the cost would be too high. Also I think it would be almost impossible to get that piece into the apartment. So in the end I had 2 workbench/kitchen bench tops cut in half and used 3 of the 4 parts.

I choose the same type of top as I had in my newly renovated kitchen and also the same handles.

Comic Book Heroes


Materials: Ikea CD storage unit, vintage cowboy comic strips, vintage arrows, digitally printed cardboard drawers

Description: A friend was tossing out an old (chipboard with green laminate) Ikea CD storage unit, so I took it home and wondered how it could be useful since storing CDs anymore is not.

I cut out vintage cowboy comic strips and squares and decoupaged (mod podge) them to all sides. I then drilled holes (not all the way through) in both sides and cut 3 vintage arrows in half and glued them into the holes on each side. I used to work at a place that had an enormous digital printer, so I had the CAD guys design a dieline for cardboard drawers that would slide into the CD cubbies. I scanned an indian from the comics, blew it up and printed it on the front of the new cardboard drawers on the digital press (which prints directly on cardboard). I added little metal horseshoes as drawer pulls with actual indian nickels as washers (I drilled a hole through the nickels). And there you have it... a functional and artistic storage piece!

Studio Bed Solution


Materials: Mandal Bed Frame and Mattress

Description: We designed the project based on an idea in the NY Times about a Cube in a loft apartment. The designer used the basic idea, but applied it to a studio without a high ceiling.


To keep the cost lower than starting from scratch we used an IKEA bed frame. We also wanted to have extra storage and the Mandal has drawer space in the frame.


Step one: my carpenter built a frame on to the Mandal structure using pre-painted and finished lumber. The frame includes shelves made from poplar wood. We left the shelves unpainted, but added a coat of white paint to the entire upper structure to match the Mandal storage drawers.


Step two: We added nine wheels to the Mandal to make the entire structure mobile. The wheels are from Coolcastors.com. Nine wheels were necessary for each part of the Mandal that was load-bearing. The wheels can be locked easily with fingers or with a gentle push from the toes.


Step three: We added a plastic material to the exterior from Piedmont Plastics. The material is polycarbonate plastic. We chose green and blue as more soothing colors.


Steps four and five: are yet to be completed. A headboard will be added with a material not yet chose covering it. Also a drop-down desk will be added to the structure that will allow a person to sit on the bed and use it or outside the structure to use it while sitting on a chair. Remote controlled battery operate lights are also planned.

Expedit turned into a guitar amp enclosure


Materials: 1 "Expedit" Shelf, 1 "Rill" pack of 4 wheels, 4 brackets

Description: Having a 50 watt guitar amp at home can be quite messy when doing the weekly clean-up. I saw at friend's house an Expedit shelf used as base for a 2x12 guitar combo, so I thought it would be a great idea to have it with wheels so you can move it to your desire without effort (Tube guitar amps can be quite heavy) and in addition, keep my pedal case tidily.


Here's my hack :

- Assemble the outside square of the Expedit shelf

- Throw away the little separators and keep the big one

- Fix the squares to the desired height and put on the shelf you keep from the previous point

- Fix the four wheels with an electric screwdriver and ...

Voila!!

Eames-inspired storage unit


Materials: 2x APA, 1x HYLLIS, screws, scrap 1/4" MDF w/birch veneer

Description: The Ikea APA toy boxes are inexpensive and reasonably attractive (with their white laminate side-panels), but I have never found them to be particularly useful for storage as intended. Inspired by a project in the book "ReadyMade: How to Make [Almost] Everything: A Do-It-Yourself Primer" and the classic Eames storage unit, I built this simple shelving unit out of two APA boxes ($14.99 each) and the vertical brackets from a HYLLIS shelving unit (also $14.99). The sliding door panels are fashioned out of some scrap 1/4" birch veneer sheets, salvaged from the back of an old BILLY bookcase. The doors slide back-and-forth in the pre-cut slots on the APA. The back panel is also scrap 1/4" birch veneer from a BILLY bookcase. Any 1/4" MDF would work for the doors and the back panel, and could easily be painted to taste if you don't have veneer.

Space-Saving Three-Drawer Chest Inset Into Plasterboard Wall

Built in Billy bookcases number ... 3


Materials: Billy (4x 80cm; 2x40 cm) including top pieces

Description: Here's another straightforward bunch of Built-in Billy bookcases.

The one Mikko did a while back inspired us after moving to a nice old big house to do something similar. Hopefully these pictures add something to the ones posted already.

All the Billy bookcases are second hand and of several generations. We even found one 90 cm wide Billy which we didn't use in the end because we couldn't find a top piece for it.

In the end two 40 cm cases and four 80 cm ones were incorporated in this build.


Two 10 cm thick beams of wood up from the floor, a wooden frame with plasterboard around and an aesthetically pleasing redone plinth on the floor and ceiling. It has that "It has always been there"-look.

The gaps between the separate bookcases were camouflaged with thin slats. The whole frame around the built ins was made from MDF.

A wall socket that was to disappear behind the new wall was extended and placed near the bottom of the wall.

In the first picture there's a shot of another hack we did: the small version of the Fado-lamp only has a 20 centimeter long tube between the ceiling cap and the lamp itself. Now it has a meter long aluminium tube so it can hang at better height above the dinner table.

Shoe cabinet transformation


Materials: SANDNES shoe cabinet

Description: Aylin tipped me on this Sandnes shoe cabinet transformation that is oh-so-chic. The hacker, Serim installed 3-D wall covers onto the cabinet doors and repainted them to match her walls. The exposed wood trim is painted a slightly lighter hue for a two-toned effect. Finish with cute knobs and there you have it. ~ Jules

Besta climbs on Expedit


Materials: Expedit, Besta

Description: We decided to move around the furniture in our living room, to get more space around the couch. We ended up with the Expedit and the two Besta bookshelves, which didn't really fit together, because of the different high and depth.

So we had the idea to put the Bestas on top of the Expedit. We only needed to remove the top of the shelves since it did not fit underneath the ceiling.
And we fixed the Bestas to the wall by using the attachments provided with the IKEA kitchen Faktum cabinets.


In between the two Bestas, I added extra shelves to put some decoration. And behind the green painting, we have the temperature control device for the heating system., which is now nicely covered, and can still be easily accessed.

Bye the way, those Bestas have a lot more shelves than the originally provided amount. They where bought in the hardware store. For us its the perfect book shelves, since they have the right depth for soft-covers.

Rack for Shoes


Materials: OMSORG

Description:
This rack is for those shoes you have to use every day.
You need the Omsorg shoe tree.
Remove the plastic end.
Take a square-shaped timber (40 x 40 mm), length 30 cm for one pair of shoes.
Drill holes with a diameter of 10 mm.
You have to insert a metal made wire with a diameter of 2 or 3 mm into the clip of Omsorg. That is for stabilization of the clip. The length of the wire is 15 cm. If you do not so, your shoes are too heavy and will bend down.

Insert the wire into the clip, glue it with hot melt adhesive and plug both into the drilled holes. Glue it with hot melt adhesive.

Das Regal ist für Schuhe, die man jeden Tag benutzt.
Man benötigt die Omsorg Schuspanner, deren Enden abgeschraubt werden.
Zur Wandbefestigung wird ein Vierkantholz benötigt. Ca. 30 cm Länge für ein Paar Schuhe, der Abstand muss mit Hilfe der Schuhe ermittelt werden.
Die Bohrungen für die Feder beträgt 10 mm. Zur Stabilisierung der Feder (Omsorg) muss ein Metalldraht (2-3 mm Durchmesser) in die Feder eingeschoben werden. Die Länge des Metalldrahtes beträgt 15 cm. Wenn der Metalldraht nicht drin ist, wird die Feder durch das Schuhgewicht nach unten gebogen.
Der Metalldraht wird in die Feder gesteckt und die Feder in die Bohrungen. Alles mit Heißkleber verkleben.
Mit der Wand verschrauben und zum Schutz der Wand ein Plastikbrett verwenden.

Silver leaf Ikea Rast Dresser Hack


Materials: Rast dresser, silver leaf, paint, crystal knobs

Description: Painted the Rast dresser with black paint, then applied silver leaf glue adhesive to fronts of drawers. Next was to lay silver leaf on the fronts. Seal the dresser with wipe-on poly and add some bling in the form of crystal knobs!

Description:

-Two Ikea Rast dressers
-Wood measured to build two shelves
-Two 6"x1"x12' pieces of wood - the surface piece cut in half and stained
-Wood filler to fill in the drawer knob holes
-A quart of hi-gloss Martha Stewart paint in Seal (used two coats)
-Six new drawer handles from Home Depot (you will need to drill new holes for the handles)
