As I was trying to stuff the remaining wreckage into a trashcan, I noticed how much (mostly) intact lumber I had left. So a few hours and a lot of sweat later, I had an outdoor coffee table. I had previously painted the chairs and bench due to some ugly sun/water damage on the wood, the table had not had any major work done - all the blue pieces were once part of the chairs or bench, and the brown were once a table. The whole thing will be polyurethane coated to showcase the weathering of the wood and paint as well as some damage from the tree. With a full, undamaged set, this could easily be turned into a normal height table - I just did not have the lumber to do it. <br /><br />Steps: <br />1) Take apart all the pieces of furniture. Save all the screws. <br /><br />2) Lay out the long pieces from the bench and table to make an approximately square configuration. Depending on your asthetic taste, you may want to trim these pieces to the same length as I did. <br /><br />3) Screw the long pieces from the seat of the bench into the under surface of the long pieces on either end. I put a third across the middle to take out some warp in some of the wood. If you overtighten the screws will stick through the surface of your tabletop. <br /><br />4) Use two boards from the seat or back of the chairs to form a "L" shape along their length (I used 90 degree clamps and a few bar clamps to glue these rather than using screws, but screws should work. Mid way of top step should do it. Use 2 screws for each side and allow vertical wood pieces to touch floor to make it stable. <br />- cut last piece as top handle onto top of 2 vertical pieces and attach with 2 screws. <br />- sand off cut edges to round them. <br />- paint to suit. <br /><br />This simple hack not only provides a safe solution for my kids but turns an inexpensive stool into a safer stool for adults that would cost way more for something comparative. <br /><br /><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5jc9hdu2jMBMXXmjj0C9ABa1hor4PrAQ8_bNs1MzTD52j-vu3o7Pw_2rjC9cYaNQhVl2XTiEtVB_dKUG-gPs-p4-p5vctrUl_o9XquOmK9Lh7q_sNhtHIlWkivZVHHOIetbDRSlkff6U/s1600/IMAG0300-775606.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604841166161239682" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5jc9hdu2jMBMXXmjj0C9ABa1hor4PrAQ8_bNs1MzTD52j-vu3o7Pw_2rjC9cYaNQhVl2XTiEtVB_dKUG-gPs-p4-p5vctrUl_o9XquOmK9Lh7q_sNhtHIlWkivZVHHOIetbDRSlkff6U/s640/IMAG0300-775606.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLdJClFD3WjwEPh_YjPa_k6Yp-dHdsrvA2XrFv4Oc-Pog1GvNzSpumVUoVWilZSly4gE0uzJmzBw2kQW0sW8ykeQzYabesDVVhcTTuEWg3AlYdvOhJfKQ5uXS7NEQElfvxQR2g0EfpeCg/s1600/IMAG0302-777337.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604841176968383986" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLdJClFD3WjwEPh_YjPa_k6Yp-dHdsrvA2XrFv4Oc-Pog1GvNzSpumVUoVWilZSly4gE0uzJmzBw2kQW0sW8ykeQzYabesDVVhcTTuEWg3AlYdvOhJfKQ5uXS7NEQElfvxQR2g0EfpeCg/s640/IMAG0302-777337.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQMpSjUZ4YM0PRRdsKCs_Zjrwd7lMtyJ5j3kP3HNGVVV_MQYYn6lw53mOu9aOEhS2N1LnwOm2oXWsMIolhLJ28swnc1rAV6sA4h50KJ_mUKTej-gXFYL382BSlEeGp1lPTFcTX6MRNb-k/s1600/IMAG0303-779213.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604841179533012626" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQMpSjUZ4YM0PRRdsKCs_Zjrwd7lMtyJ5j3kP3HNGVVV_MQYYn6lw53mOu9aOEhS2N1LnwOm2oXWsMIolhLJ28swnc1rAV6sA4h50KJ_mUKTej-gXFYL382BSlEeGp1lPTFcTX6MRNb-k/s640/IMAG0303-779213.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><br />~ Peter Brunton, Orlando, Florida, USAfa.ahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885395645412886666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3955697760581556911.post-18033937746238029522011-05-25T10:44:00.000-07:002011-05-28T12:50:40.325-07:00Trofast frames to play table<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiF5NRYvljfRoAjBfmZkbctqpKCJt0fv80kWkbIPvl3IonKGXM0hom2eg8vztyGjQ3DS3SsBKV4eDfAUbpeUR_I1Lh51PTsKdFd16_ZINTkL61UIGc4W_lpDO98o0VLmyVj11fMeSdp0/s1600/022+%2528800x570%2529-774693.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604742807918938690" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiF5NRYvljfRoAjBfmZkbctqpKCJt0fv80kWkbIPvl3IonKGXM0hom2eg8vztyGjQ3DS3SsBKV4eDfAUbpeUR_I1Lh51PTsKdFd16_ZINTkL61UIGc4W_lpDO98o0VLmyVj11fMeSdp0/s640/022+%2528800x570%2529-774693.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><br /><b>Materials:</b> Trofast x's 2, mdf, connecting hardware, glue, nails<br /><br /><b>Description:</b> We used 2 Trofast frames and put them together according to manufacturers instructions. width="450" /></a></div><br /><b>Materials:</b> Lack zig-zag shelves, L-brackets, hardware<br /><br /><b>Description:</b> This hack comes from Italy! <br />So, my partner and I bought 4 LACK zig-zag shelves, 2 red and 2 black ones, with the idea of stacking them all on the same wall, with alternating colours, but then changed our mind about it. Only 1 shelf went on said wall as originally planned, and we used the other 3 in alternative ways.<br /><br />The red shelf, we turned into a holder for my partner's keyboard (pic above). We have this small guestroom he uses as his "study" and we wanted a floating shelf to hold his keyboard so it wouldn't take any space on the floor. That's where the remaining shelf came in handy! We assembled it in a different way (see picture), and to do so we drilled additional holes in the shelf so we could join the two Z-shaped parts together as we needed, using a couple more of those small wooden Ikea pegs. <br /><br />Then we hung it to the wall and put 3 L-brackets under it for support. We needed the L-brackets because that wall is basically a plaster wall, unable to securely lodge the nogs, otherwise we would have used invisible nogs instead of the brackets. <br /><br />So now we have the perfect keyboard-holder, with enough legroom under it to sit and play comfortably and shelves on each side to hold the loudspeaker and other stuff (and you can see a redecorated LACK square table on the side, too!).<br /><br />Two shelves, the black ones, went to form a pretty decorative "shelf system" on another empty wall of our living room.<br /><br /><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgsTKuUmyebrLCpZu2s9uO1DM0XAwSydf3QJlvlz1vK19PUrLylF319aEGUV2VUbnxk6G8oC1-W9wpQvXYJEdoGFsSy4iPCPGo-pOeoecKcONDPmrPAhZv0gA4Izc6DZ0FlG9XKlqgE1A/s1600/pic01-720628.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604589673053953794" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgsTKuUmyebrLCpZu2s9uO1DM0XAwSydf3QJlvlz1vK19PUrLylF319aEGUV2VUbnxk6G8oC1-W9wpQvXYJEdoGFsSy4iPCPGo-pOeoecKcONDPmrPAhZv0gA4Izc6DZ0FlG9XKlqgE1A/s640/pic01-720628.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><br />We hung the one on the left first, using the nogs that came with the shelf. Then we added some L-brackets under each horizontal section of the shelf to hold it in place and provide additional support. We didn't want the brackets to show so we made sure that the vertical "stem" of the bracket was hidden behind the vertical section of the shelf.<br /><br /><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKrGMXDlJqFkE4LIxUhk6A51XawKoyjt1u4-mLFFIv3PQXmzOi7XgsA4xby5KpPHg8qQZ_rmcIyKAj3kmtD9TsoczDGOwcwSzKMLyypRlG6S3zOJHDu3GaQZXTtuG3GufuVnYmMTcK3O4/s1600/pic02-721386.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604589674623414210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKrGMXDlJqFkE4LIxUhk6A51XawKoyjt1u4-mLFFIv3PQXmzOi7XgsA4xby5KpPHg8qQZ_rmcIyKAj3kmtD9TsoczDGOwcwSzKMLyypRlG6S3zOJHDu3GaQZXTtuG3GufuVnYmMTcK3O4/s640/pic02-721386.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><br />Once we had the first LACK in place, we proceeded to hang the second one. We divided it into 3 smaller L sections so it was easier to handle and we could drill the necessary holes into the wall more comfortably, assembling the next bit once the previous one was in place. <br /><br />We started from the bottom, to form the larger bottom shelf, then proceeded upwards until the whole thing was securely in place. <br /><br />We used some flat metallic brackets to join the two shelves at the bottom. Because our wall wasn't even, an irregular gap formed between the two shelves in the point where they connect to each other, so we carefully laid out a sheet of black adhesive "vinyl" paper over that part of the shelf, including the front edge, so it would cover the gap and create an even, seamless surface <br /><br /><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlePew-fZIqPJ1lxfgAMyNWZKm3PtsFR0LhvcXfFLEDEMIbbsEXkCD5ECaV26yOnDCuW2wVMXaHZMGbOBwhRotDfkeBouUcfdUq59a1cFFS1F0xYYB7aUK6HdisEcr8d8mP1WZyNU_fQs/s1600/pic03-721908.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604589680745106786" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlePew-fZIqPJ1lxfgAMyNWZKm3PtsFR0LhvcXfFLEDEMIbbsEXkCD5ECaV26yOnDCuW2wVMXaHZMGbOBwhRotDfkeBouUcfdUq59a1cFFS1F0xYYB7aUK6HdisEcr8d8mP1WZyNU_fQs/s640/pic03-721908.JPG" width="450" /></a></div><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiMJgciHmWOSD9MxfBFqZiZeuNV-snmzppHPIQUEAHZLKUgnugtYBov0_wNt9CoLScYjz8tKy-G8SYKgNk_F4k4AesI3oB6h5kbgt1xTF7zraI_JxVpiKSyq2lF7BVdRiXMJ5tsYrOpg/s1600/pic04-722452.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604589681217485314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiMJgciHmWOSD9MxfBFqZiZeuNV-snmzppHPIQUEAHZLKUgnugtYBov0_wNt9CoLScYjz8tKy-G8SYKgNk_F4k4AesI3oB6h5kbgt1xTF7zraI_JxVpiKSyq2lF7BVdRiXMJ5tsYrOpg/s640/pic04-722452.JPG" width="450" /></a></div><br />We're really happy with the result! <br /><br />~ Daniela, Rome, Italyfa.ahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885395645412886666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3955697760581556911.post-34382272455144224862011-05-24T07:07:00.000-07:002011-05-28T12:50:40.326-07:00SPONTAN Magnetic NOT Markerboard<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUBAWYCGn1JIVFK33cFuKqMXffTdRLjYXVrfzJjkaQElVPJcEQ-mUhSz8yMpf74zrBqHltnKa-pdYpToqFvp0-41UGnFukefymLNWX7ofsP2asBz5p9KPDs5zZ9C-y6TZA8IPQItfT4pw/s1600/chalkboardikeahack-769282.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604567548375577090" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUBAWYCGn1JIVFK33cFuKqMXffTdRLjYXVrfzJjkaQElVPJcEQ-mUhSz8yMpf74zrBqHltnKa-pdYpToqFvp0-41UGnFukefymLNWX7ofsP2asBz5p9KPDs5zZ9C-y6TZA8IPQItfT4pw/s640/chalkboardikeahack-769282.JPG" width="450" /></a></div><br /><b>Materials:</b> SPONTAN Magnetic board, sandpaper, chalkboard paint<br /><br /><b>Description:</b> I am bad at reading the fine print. Let's just start there. <br /><br />I saw the smooth SPONTAN magnet board at IKEA and assumed that because it was smooth it was a marker board as well as a magnet board. Well... you know what happens when you assume, right? <br /><br />So I couldn't get the marks off the board and pretty much decided the board was junk. All I wanted was a write and magnet combination. Then I realized I had chalkboard paint in the basement left over from another project. <br /><br />This hack is SUPER easy. Even a caveman could do it. <br /><br />I lightly sanded the magnet board down and put three coats of chalkboard paint on it. That's it. I waited 24 hours between coats just to make sure it had enough time to dry between coats. <br /><br />Works (an erases even) like a charm now!<br /><br />See more of the <a href="http://clovergnome.com/?p=178">magnetic chalkboard</a>. <br /><br />~ Crystina, Saint Paulfa.ahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11885395645412886666noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3955697760581556911.post-47475845208137498062011-05-23T10:31:00.000-07:002011-05-28T12:50:40.326-07:00A Place for Everything<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRNSnROb63t4DayHTDaKcMuFUVcc7rQnvyaigwGMKqLYjCfOYx2dsAtJG22iSV9JV6nL2d-PNpwHDGIKkp4BAaN33JxrnsjbflJlCBUnqDUksg2UklMmBC2THMPybqKuzNge1iceCzdeA/s1600/DSC_0786-770999.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604538350165163666" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRNSnROb63t4DayHTDaKcMuFUVcc7rQnvyaigwGMKqLYjCfOYx2dsAtJG22iSV9JV6nL2d-PNpwHDGIKkp4BAaN33JxrnsjbflJlCBUnqDUksg2UklMmBC2THMPybqKuzNge1iceCzdeA/s640/DSC_0786-770999.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><br /><b>Materials:</b> IKEA Kitchen Components: One APPLAD 36 inch wide 4 Drawer Base Cabinet - white, One 36 inch Base Cabinet Shell - white, One APPLAD Refrigerator Wall Cabinet 36 wide X 15 1/4 tall X 24 deep, One 36 inch wide shelf, Pulls as desired <br /><br /><b>Description:</b> We utilized IKEA kitchen cabinetry to transform a standard 36 X 72 hall closet into a modern landing station/storage center. The objective was to utilize space behind the knee walls which abound in our Cape Cod–style house. Destination of STUVA units was knee wall beside each of our daughters’ beds. Units we chose were two STUVA units of same height which we planned to stack on top of each other. We configured bottom unit to have 2 small top drawers and larger bottom drawer. Top unit was skinnier and only had shelves with no doors.<br /><br /><b>Wall Preparation</b><br />Stacked STUVA unit was 50.5" high. The knee wall can only accommodate a 46" high unit. Opening of appropriate size was cut out of the wall using plasterboard saw and hand saw. Simple inverted-C platform using 2"x3" studs was provided to support the bottom of unit. Nailers were attached to wall studs to provide mounting points for STUVA system.<br /><br /><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsiXshM9MtgYufJYrJMWg1RKQqi0ViR8tUDUiyOaq7_3EhftTbZNYLfqpY8vgxIC8Oc5akdElahYiVJPjqZgiacZ3aAvcGDm88M2a_OXrjqtd60tkBi94m46aNt2qzYJqwvjJu7xYCMU0/s1600/ikea_hack_common-759306.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604174513977324338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsiXshM9MtgYufJYrJMWg1RKQqi0ViR8tUDUiyOaq7_3EhftTbZNYLfqpY8vgxIC8Oc5akdElahYiVJPjqZgiacZ3aAvcGDm88M2a_OXrjqtd60tkBi94m46aNt2qzYJqwvjJu7xYCMU0/s640/ikea_hack_common-759306.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg600TVzAvKcfejo-V7CG6WbfBiI983WmLCHSuowL9lzIT9jId6BKJT-yzCu5TW7njPO97T1jjTCbYz7iRnJCMxKb2rBf4T19sWEjVaZ_6pCQZrYWOv2anW1GeonofDpoSonbS0eeycNfI/s1600/ikae_hack_2_1-760024.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604174518049554642" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg600TVzAvKcfejo-V7CG6WbfBiI983WmLCHSuowL9lzIT9jId6BKJT-yzCu5TW7njPO97T1jjTCbYz7iRnJCMxKb2rBf4T19sWEjVaZ_6pCQZrYWOv2anW1GeonofDpoSonbS0eeycNfI/s640/ikae_hack_2_1-760024.jpg" width="450" /></a></div><br /><b>STUVA Unit Preparation</b><br />Bottom of skinnier unit only had shelves so we decided to cut off the bottom by 4". The total height of stacked unit now became 45.5" which fitted in 46" high wall opening. STUVA units had flimsy cardboard backs so ¼" MDF boards were nailed to backs. Some old newspaper was stuffed into the cavity between these 2 boards. Two 2"x2" steel straps were screwed into backs of STUVA top and bottom units. Holes were pre-drilled at the back bottom of lower unit. Bottom was anchored to inverted-C platform under it using 3-3" nails. Additional holes were pre-drilled on each side and anchored to wood blocks installed earlier using 3" nails. Molding was installed around each unit to cover gaps between wall and closet system.
