Mystery Photo
any background is appreciated
UPDATE This is US military photo circa 1941-1945. There are many more
Chrisco tells us a fascinating story in relation with this picture:
"The Air Force understood that it was of paramount importance to maintain absolute secrecy surrounding the mission preparations for the dropping of the first atomic weapons on Japan.
A program was instituted that informed a few hundred Air Force personnel that they had been selected to work on a super secret project. The selected airmen were gathered together onto the same base, where posters such as the one in your mystery photo were hung. The airmen were then fed a phony story about a secret weapon that would somehow win us the war quickly and decisively. They were told not to discuss the project, or any other aspect of Air Force equipment and training with anyone. Then they were all sent home on a short leave before the project was to commence.
Each one of them was followed by a government agent who posed as a fellow traveler, acted very friendly and offered to buy the airmen meals and drinks to show appreciation for their service to their country. After a full stomach and a few drinks, the agents plied the airmen with questions about the war effort and what their particular role was in fighting the Axis. Those who kept their mouths shut went on to work on the real project. Those who didn't went elsewhere."
Be mindful of this, too -
