Wicked Wearable Sculptures

"QUANTUM SHOT" #491

If you want a weirder mask or a costume, you'd have to ask aliens to make it

How many times have you seen the same variations of witches, vampires and superhero costumes? Boring, I say, utterly unexciting. So, we decided to bring you the wickedest wearable stuff, bordering on insanity, that would be next to impossible to forget - the kind of costumes that would leave shock in their wake, rather than just mountains of candy.

Glasgow based Spanish artist Kepa Rasmussen makes Kafka-esque Wearable Sculptures, or "topologically extruded masks" (we featured his work before)

Continuing with the theme of disturbing and marvelous wearable sculptures, we asked Kepa to recommend other artists who make that stuff. The name Gareth Pugh came up first. His fashion is other-wordly enough to be worn at Halloween, and yet classy enough for that avantgarde reception (.... but just barely. Stay away from that black rabbit costume, anyways)

Darth Vader's soul-mate has been found, at the long last:

This is "fashion as performance" clothing, where some parts of the costume are inflatable, and others are linked like a chain mail. Caroline Moiret from Suspended Kinetics shows more cheerful (and maybe more wearable) "wearable sculpture" on her site:

Literally hair-raising, Nagi Noda's bizarre "animal hair" hats:

Costumes gone deliciously wrong

Frightening examples of sheer lunacy - but then again, isn't Halloween all about frightening lunacy? So these costumes fit right in (look at the cat's face on the bottom right) -

This one is easy to make and sure to impress:

Wicked masks to conceal your cuddly nature...

...and innocent masks to lure them into your snakes-and-spiders world. All kinds of deception is a fair game on Halloween, and artists are glad to provide morbid, lugubrious pieces.... Here are some of the most memorable ones:
